Gas Safety Week 8th–14th September 2025

Gas Safety

Gas Safety Week 2025 is an annual event organised by the Gas Safety Register to raise awareness of gas safety issues and to keep everyone safe.

The theme in 2025 is “Looking after your home, friends and family”, making people aware that everyone has a role to keep the nation ‘gas safe’—whether it’s your home or a business property you manage.

Workers, families and friends are at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by unsafe and badly maintained gas appliances. These dangers can also lead to gas leaks, fires, and explosions.

Keep Your Property Gas Safe

Ensure all gas appliances are inspected annually and repaired only by a Gas Safe registered competent person. Check both sides of the contractor’s Gas Safe ID card—the reverse side confirms the engineer is qualified to undertake the relevant work.

Know the Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Breathlessness

  • Nausea

  • Collapse

  • Loss of consciousness

Carbon monoxide is released when gas appliances do not have enough oxygen to burn correctly. Look out for these warning signs of a carbon monoxide leak:

  • A boiler pilot light keeps going out

  • A floppy yellow or orange flame instead of a crisp blue flame on a gas hob

  • Dark or sooty staining on or around a gas appliance

  • Condensation in a room where there is a gas appliance

Ventilation and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Gas appliances require proper ventilation to work safely. Check that chimneys or vents are not blocked.

Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm near any gas appliances. Ensure the alarm:

  • Is marked BS EN 50291

  • Displays the British Standards Kitemark

Test the alarm regularly and replace batteries as needed.

If your gas-burning appliance and carbon monoxide alarm are in a remote area of the building, consider installing a Bluetooth carbon monoxide alarm. Place the sister alarm in a regularly occupied area nearest to the room containing the fuel-burning appliance.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you are concerned that a gas appliance is not working correctly, you smell gas, or you feel you are in immediate danger:

  • Turn off the gas appliance

  • Turn off the gas supply at the meter

  • Call the gas emergency helpline on 0800 111 999 (mainland GB)

If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, seek medical attention immediately.

Share Gas Safety Information

Make sure your colleagues are aware of this vital gas safety information. Spread the message during Gas Safety Week 2025 to help protect homes, businesses, and the people you care about.
