Workplace Harassment: Managing Risk and Meeting Employer Responsibilities

WORKPLACE HARASSMENT Escalation Concept Shown With Figures On Chalkboard

Workplace harassment is no longer just an employee relations issue – it’s a significant legal, financial and reputational risk for employers.

Recent changes to UK employment law have placed greater responsibility on employers to take proactive steps to prevent harassment in the workplace. Following the introduction of the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 in October 2024, further changes under the Employment Rights Act 2025 are set to take effect from October 2026, expanding employer obligations even further.

Despite increased awareness and regulation, workplace harassment remains a persistent problem.

According to the Office for National Statistics Crime Survey for England and Wales (year ending March 2025):

  • 22.5% of people experienced sexual harassment in the workplace during the previous 12 months
  • 7.1% experienced harassment from a colleague
  • 6.2% experienced harassment by a third party
  • 5.2% experienced sexual harassment from a client, customer or member of the public

With enforcement expectations increasing and employers facing greater scrutiny, organisations must be able to demonstrate that they have taken reasonable and proactive steps to prevent harassment before issues arise.
