UK Identity Cards
15 December 2009
The Identity and Passport Service will soon be launching two new identity cards: the National Identity Card (for British citizens); and the Identification Card (for European Economic Area and Swiss nationals). These are part of the rollout of the National Identity Service and it is important that you make sure your business is ready, and understands the difference between each card.
The initial launch which started on the 30th November 2009 is to those living in Greater Manchester only. However these identity cards could be presented anywhere in the country and in future will be available to everyone in the UK.
When recruiting, you are required to check an individual’s identity, in addition you many need to check an individual’s age as part of your daily business operations and may be shown one of the cards as a visual proof of identity.
These cards are in addition to the Identity Card for Foreign Nationals that was launched in November 2008 by the UK Border Agency.
